  1. Type 2 Diabetes
  2. Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
  3. Dyslipidemia (High Cholesterol)
  4. Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  5. Cardiovascular Disease (such as coronary artery disease)
  6. Insulin Resistance (including conditions like prediabetes or metabolic syndrome)
  7. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

Who should not take semaglutide?
  • Personal or Family History of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC): Semaglutide carries a risk of thyroid C-cell tumors, including MTC, based on animal studies, though this hasn’t been
    • Gallbladder Disease: Semaglutide may increase the risk of gallbladder-related issues, such as cholelithiasis (gallstones) and cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder). Patients with a history of gallbladder disease should be monitored closely while on semaglutide.
  • Kidney Disease: There have been reports of acute kidney injury and worsening of chronic kidney disease in patients taking semaglutide. While the exact cause is not fully understood, it may be related to dehydration, nausea, or vomiting that sometimes occurs as side effects of the medication. Patients with renal impairment should be monitored for changes in kidney function.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy: In clinical trials, patients with pre-existing diabetic retinopathy who were taking semaglutide experienced a worsening of their condition more often than those who were not taking the drug. Caution is advised for individuals with this condition, and regular eye exams should be performed.
  • Heart Rate Increase: Semaglutide has been associated with a slight increase in heart rate. Though the clinical significance of this is not fully understood, individuals with a history of heart disease or arrhythmias should be monitored for changes in heart rate while taking the medication.
  • Pancreatic Issues: As mentioned earlier, semaglutide has been associated with an increased risk of pancreatitis. Those with a history of pancreatic issues should be cautious and report any symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting.
  • Depression and Suicidal Thoughts: Although rare, some patients have reported experiencing depression, mood changes, or suicidal thoughts while taking semaglutide. This is more of a concern for individuals with a history of mental health disorders, and they should be monitored closely.
  • Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar): While semaglutide itself does not cause hypoglycemia, it can increase the risk of low blood sugar when used in combination with insulin or other antidiabetic medications like sulfonylureas. This is a particular concern for individuals who are on a combination of therapies that lower blood glucose.
  • Severe Allergic Reactions: Although not common, some patients have reported serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, angioedema, and skin reactions such as urticaria (hives). Individuals with a history of severe allergic reactions should be cautious.
  • Pregnancy: Avoid using Semaglutide at least two months prior to planning a pregnancy.
